Newborns are truly Kelly’s favorite subjects to photograph. Her passion for capturing their newness shows in the ways she soothes, comforts, and poses them. After a session, many clients remark on how comfortable they felt with Kelly and how much they enjoyed the session. Newborns stay little for such a short period of time, and Kelly loves to capture those little details before they begin to change.
When should I call to schedule my newborn session?
You should call BEFORE your baby is born! It is important to plan ahead. Capturing your newborn within the first 2 weeks of life, preferably under 10 days old, while they are still sleepy and curled up can make all the difference in your newborn portraits. It is also important to have your session penciled in for your due date, to make sure we have you on our schedule. Since we never really know when your little one will arrive, once we put you on our schedule we will hold a spot for you. Once your baby is born we will move your appointment to within the time frame to accommodate you.
Is one week old too early for my newborn session?
Not at all! Newborn babies photograph best between 6-10 days old. At this age newborns are still very sleepy and like to curl up for poses like when they were in the womb. This is the perfect time to capture their newness, before they start waking up and becoming more alert. This is also before baby acne and other skin issues appear. We take up to 3 hours for a newborn session and leave plenty of time for comforting and feeding your newborn in a nice, relaxed environment.
What should baby wear?
Newborns photograph best without any clothes at all. Kelly also loves to photograph babies swaddled in blankets and wraps with lots of texture and snuggled up in buckets and baskets. Kelly has invested in the best custom made blankets, knits and headbands, that will coordinate beautifully with the blankets and props that Kelly will use to style your session. When you dress your newborn for the session, avoid any onsies that have to be pulled over their heads, as if they arrive asleep we will get started right away with your session and we don’t want to wake them. Also avoid any outfits with elastic as this may leave marks on their new skin.
How should I prepare for my newborn session?
We recommend that you try to keep baby awake for an hour or two before the session, so baby is nice and sleepy when he/she arrives. If you live within 30 minutes of the studio, and baby is hungry before leaving, you may feed him right before you leave. You should carry your baby into the studio in their car seat, and allow Kelly to lift him/her out when you arrive. This will allow baby to hopefully remain asleep and not smell mom if she were to take them out of the carseat, making them more likely to stay asleep so Kelly can begin posing right away.
If you are traveling from further than 3o minutes away, you should feed baby when you arrive at the studio. Sleepy babies photograph best, so Kelly will ask you to remove babies clothing and will swaddle baby before feeding, so as not to wake them when undressing them after feeding. We can take several breaks during the session for feeding to ensure baby is full, sleepy, and happy. We ask that during the session, you not be worried about staying on a specific schedule for feeding, but feed on demand to ensure a smooth session. We also highly recommend bringing a pacifier, even if you normally do not use one, just for the session, as this allows the baby to be soothed quickly between poses when they are full and sleepy, but just not used to being moved around when sleeping, as this will allow your session to flow much more easily as well. If bottle feeding, please bring extra bottles as well.
Can I be photographed with my baby?
Yes! This is our speciality and we love capturing the emotion of those special first days with your new little one. There is no image more touching than a new mommy or daddy snuggling with their newborn child. We recommend parents bring a long sleeved neutral colored shirt, such as cream or black, and moms can bring a cream or black tank if they wish.
