Planning For Your Session
At Madison Kelly Photography, I want you to enjoy your custom photography session. During your session you can expect a fun and relaxed atmosphere. I want you to feel at home and relish the experience of capturing the important milestones in your life. I like to get to know my clients to capture your true expressions and personalities.
With families, I like to take both posed and candid shots. When photographing small children, please feel free to bring their favorite snacks or toys. I understand young children may need breaks and that is okay. I also know children sometimes need to warm up to me after they first meet me, and that’s okay too!
When photographing newborns, we will also take breaks as needed to provide lots of snuggle time and feeding as necessary. With newborns, the studio is kept very warm at around 80 degrees to allow the babies to stay nice and warm while getting those sweet, curled up poses, so I suggest you dress in layers if it is cold outside as it won’t be cold in the studio. I also suggest bringing a change of clothes as newborns have accidents quite often! Make sure to bring wipes and diapers as well. Newborn sessions typically last 2-3 hours, so please plan accordingly.
Suggestions on What to Bring and Wear For Your Session:
I have an extensive prop collection for newborns at my studio, so you do not need to bring anything.
I suggest dressing baby in a loose fitting sleeper that won’t leave elastic marks on your newborns skin. A detailed package of information will be sent to you upon booking your session with additional information.
For mom, a simple black or white tank, or shirt is perfect or we can wrap you here in the studio. Simple is best. Portraits with your newborn against your skin in a wrap are beautiful and timeless.
For dad, a black or white t-shirt or bare chest work best with newborn portraits.
One Year and Cake Smash Sessions
You should bring 3-4 outfits for your session to get several different looks.
If doing a cake smash, bring a small cake or cupcake for your child to “smash” at the session.
You are welcome to bring a personalized banner if you have one to go with your specific theme, or you can use ours which coordinates with most colors.
Additional ideas include:
Balloons in your colors/balloon bouquet
Pettiskirts or tutus for girls, along with headbands, jewelry, or hats
Personalized diaper covers or outfit you don’t mind getting messy for cake smash for boys
Families and Children Sessions
Family sessions will take place outdoors, either at a local park, field, or an agreed upon urban setting.
For outdoor family portraits, layering and coordinated but not necessarily matching colors look great. Similar tones, such as deep jewel tones look great together for family shots, as do beautiful neutrals such as pinks and greys with beautiful textures. Your clothes should look natural, look like you and be fun. Pops of color look great!
Avoid all white or all black color schemes.
Accessories such as headbands, jewelry, hats, scarves and jackets can really add interest to your photos.
Consider denim, fun flirty dresses, tutus, boots, cowboy boots, striped or patterned stockings or tights add sweet touches to photos.
Layering accessories or sweaters and jackets and then taking the jacket or scarf off for some of the photos gives some great variety to your photos without having to completely change clothes.
Girls look adorable in cute skirts or sundresses, and I love headbands and cute accessories, tutus, etc. In colder months, layer scarfs and hats or cute tights and boots look great.
Boys look great in jeans and layers with hats and scarves as well in cooler months.
Avoid logos and completely matching outfits.
Indoors, bare feet are really cute. When outdoors, make sure you coordinate your shoes with your outfits, so they blend but don’t stand out, and be careful to not wear heels that could sink in the grass. Boots are always cute! You can always find great ideas for coordinated outfits from Zara, Crew Cuts, Persnickety Clothing, Mini Boden, Zulily, Janie and Jack, Koko Blush and Company, Baby Gap, Gap, Old Navy, Anthropology, Children’s Place, and Gymboree, etc. Make sure not to wear any tops with a logo showing on the front, however, as they are very distracting in photos.
I have lots of newborn outfits and accessories available for newborns and baby girls, as well as maternity outfits. For maternity sessions, I have several skirts, wraps and outfits you can borrow. It is usually best to bring several choices, and I can help you with narrowing it down to the best selection.
Boys look great in jeans. I do not suggest shorts for portraits. Deep jewel tones as well as bright colors are very popular right now and look great in your photographs. Just remember to choose a look that is you, as this should be capturing your personalities. Also, I usually suggest casual outfits rather than formal ones, to get those sweet candid shots that really show your true personalities and who you really are rather than a formal posed shot.
For a child session, feel free to bring two to three outfit changes to get different looks if you wish.
